Open Call: Support for Research and Development of new outdoor work
We are no longer accepting applications for Blueprint
We would like to thank each artist and company that proposed a project for our 2021 Blueprint Programme.
The proposals will be processed and review by the Without Walls Artistic Directorate. We are aiming to let people know whether their proposal will be taken forward by the end of March.
You may be contacted by a member of the Without Walls management team at XTRAX for further information about your proposal.
The information below is for reference only.
Are you looking for support for the research and development costs of new outdoor work for presentation in 2022 and beyond?
Without Walls is looking for artists and companies working on early and mid-stage projects to support through the Blueprint R&D programme. This support is for work intended for presentation from 2022 at the earliest.
We believe that artists need time and critical resources to turn their ideas into a reality and that’s why we think it’s important to invest now into ambitious outdoor arts projects for the future.
Since its inception in 2018, Blueprint has supported the creation of 33 shows, with many going on to become fully realised productions that have toured across the UK and internationally.
Many of our previous Blueprint artists and companies have found that our R&D support has given them the time and space to test and scale-up their ideas, the chance to part of a growing community of outdoor art specialists and as a useful platform for assisting with further fundraising and engaging new supporters and commissioners for their work.
To apply, please carry on reading and download our guidance documents at the bottom of this page. Be sure to check out our briefing film which outlines what you can expect when applying for Blueprint.
We will also be sharing a guidance video in the coming weeks with a member of the selection panel and one of our current Blueprint artists – you can submit questions about Blueprint for our panel at the bottom of this page.

Projects that intend to request creation support from Without Walls for 2023 onwards will need to complete their R&D process by August 2022.
Without Walls are committed to supporting artists during these challenging times and want to continue to support the creation of new work and opportunities. We are doing our best to ensure our projects and plans are adaptable to the changing environment and the unexpected effects of the pandemic. With this in mind, please bear with us if there are any adjustments to the existing plan for Blueprint and we will keep you updated with any developments. Some useful resources whilst planning your application and for general interest are here.
Eligibility and guidance
- Without Walls is looking for work from all disciplines and genres, that is innovative and ambitious and challenges the idea of what outdoor arts can be.
- Without Walls supports work that is designed for outdoor touring and artists should be committed to exploring touring opportunities for the works beyond the Without Walls festivals.
- Proposals for work could be adaptable in scale, suitable for daytime and/or evening presentation and may also include promenade or processional based elements.
- Without Walls exists to support the development of new and ambitious work by UK artists; projects can be developed in association with international artists, but the lead partner on the project must be based in the UK.
