Without Walls invites artists and companies from any discipline to request R&D support for the development of new outdoor work for presentation in 2014 or 2015.

Research and Development support

We have a limited budget to invest in Research and Development (R&D) support for artists to create new shows for presentation in 2014 or 2015. We recognise that ambitious new work takes time to bring to fruition and that artists can benefit from the opportunity to explore new ideas as part of the development process, before committing to a production. We also know that this type of planning process can assist with fundraising for a new project and that it can be a useful way of engaging commissioners, supporters and partners in new work.

Priorities

Our priorities for investment of R&D funds are detailed below. We will prioritise investment in work that meets one or more of these agendas;

1) Large Scale work

By Large Scale work we mean work that is suitable for an audience of 2000 or more people in one performance. Large-scale work should be suitable for playing on a variety of surfaces and in a variety of settings both urban and rural.

2) Work by culturally diverse & deaf and disabled artists

We are committed to supporting work that is led by and features culturally diverse & deaf and disabled artists

3) Work that reflects on the centenary of the start of the 1st World War

2014 marks the centenary of the 1st World War and we are keen to contribute to the reflections on themes of war and peace and other topics related to this anniversary.

Please ensure you read the full guidance notes below.

Practicalities and money

We have an overall budget of approximately £25,000 to invest in R&D.
We expect to offer support to between 2 and 5 proposals.
We expect to invest between £2000 – £5000 in small-scale projects and more in Large Scale proposals.
We do not expect to offer more than £8,000 in any one project.

We welcome artists who have other investors in their R&D projects but this is not crucial at this stage.

FAQ

Note to artists & companies who have applied for R&D support in 2012 and were unsuccessful
We would not advise to submit the same proposal unless your idea/project has developed and meets the eligibility criteria. Please note Without Walls has less money to invest in R&D this year therefore we expect to support between 2 and 5 projects.

Important information regarding Grants for the Arts
Without Walls is supported through Grants for the Arts so a project commissioned by Without Walls is unable to apply to Grants for the Arts for match funding. (Receiving R&D support from Without Walls does not exclude you from applying to Grants for Arts for the development of a full production, but Without Walls money cannot be used as match funding to a Grants for Arts application).

If you have received R&D funds through Grants for the Arts but you wish to apply for further R&D investment from Without Walls, you will need to explain very clearly how the Without Walls investment differs from that already made by Grants for the Arts. Arts Council England expects Without Walls to support other projects than the ones they are already investing in and we are being monitored very closely on this.

CAPTIVE by MOTIONHOUSE
Supported by Without Walls

Captive

Performed by four dancers in a large cage, Captive is inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem The Panther and considers how a human, like an animal, can be plucked from normal life and plunged into captivity. Redention has made the human experience the same as the animal’s and with
confinement thrust upon the unsuspecting victim, the wild and free must find ways of expressing
within the bordered and caged. Powerfully physical, emotionally charged and extraordinary,
Captive is a dazzling blend of dance and aerial work.

Motionhouse creates startling, passionate dance theatre. Our productions are
designed to challenge as well as delight our audiences and they fuse images with
action and dynamism. Our performances are rooted in dance but draw on theatre,
circus, acrobatics and film to create work that makes you think and feel.

Bad Taste Company combine world-class Breaking skills with physical theatre and narrative to produce work that has been said to “take British urban dance to new heights” (Royston Maldoom OBE) Bad Taste have represented the UK and Ireland internationally since 1998, and continue to create work that redefines the vocabulary of breaking.

In this re-imagining of Goethe’s “Faust”, drinking, gambling, womanising, and general debauchery make the Speakeasy a perfect place for a man to lose his soul, as we see when Faust is manipulated, to both comic and tragic effect, into a deal with the devil where his very soul hangs in the balance.

Told through the intense physical and narrative dance style that Bad Taste Kompany have become renowned for, ‘Speakeasy’ features a unique fusion of world-class breaking combined with Lindy Hop, Charleston, and swinging big band music of the roaring 20′s that taps into the spirit of gangsters, bootleggers, gamblers, flappers, and hep cats of the time.

Building on the success of the 2011 outdoor commission “Tribal Assembly”, flaming cocktails, burning boxing rings, and a literally explosive set combine with world class dance skills and authentic 20s styling to provide an experience not to be missed.

2 tightwire artists, 2 dancers, a trampoline duo and a dancing clown search for the beautiful in the fragile & the fragile in the seemingly beautiful.

Maresa von Stockert’s latest cross artform collaboration for the outdoors combines contemporary circus, dance and physical theatre.

FRAGILE’s architectural set creates the illusion of the performance being on a rooftop. Imagine a flat concrete roof where someone has put up a garden with a few plants in pots and some grass.
One layer of the piece will expose the microcosm of human activity taking place in this garden. It will look at the lives of those who visit the roof terrace and explore what the garden means to them.

For the creator of the garden it may be an oasis or even an obsession.
Others make it their hide-away, a place where they can escape reality.
Some may see it as a playground, others as a forbidden space.
For one person it may resemble paradise, for another a foreign world of green discomfort, bewilderment and fear.

While intricate relationships tenderly and brutally entwine, a strange transformation happens to the garden itself enhancing the sense of a warped reality and other worldliness unfolding…
