On 1 April 2018, Without Walls will join Arts Council England’s National Portfolio as the only new Band 3 organisation announced in this funding round. The annual investment of £1.2 million from ACE over each of the next four years will be transformative, allowing the network to forward-plan in a way that has not been previously possible, planning strategic programmes of innovative work that will reach more people, and launching a flexible programme of R&D that over time will transform the quality and stretch the boundaries of the work the consortium creates.

We are looking for new Board members who are excited by this potential and whose enthusiasm and expertise can help shape the future of Outdoor Arts in the UK.

About the Board:
Until now the Board of Directors has been formed by representatives from each of the festivals that make up the Artistic Directorate. Over the last year we have reviewed our company structure and from 1 April 2018 a new Board will set Without Walls’ strategy; uphold its vision and values and deliver its mission, aims and objectives; and oversee the work of the Artistic Directorate, the Associate Touring Network and the management team in accordance with the organisation’s constitution, legal and financial obligations. Board members drawn from the Artistic Directorate and the Associate Touring Network will be balanced by independent external voices with specialist expertise and an equal passion for the work of the consortium.

The new Board will work alongside an Independent Executive Chair, currently Josephine Burns, co-founder and Senior Associate of BOP Consulting. The strategic development and day to day management of the network and its activity is managed by XTRAX, an independent management and production company based in Manchester.

The Board will also nominate a Finance and General Purposes Sub-Committee to scrutinise finance and contract documents in advance of full Board discussions; and a Marketing and Development Sub-Committee, with a brief to survey income generating potential in order to meet the modest targets set in the Business Plan and budget for 2018-22.

Board members serve a term of three years, renewable up to a maximum of three terms. Subject to availability, appointments will start in April 2018. New Board members will be supported by an induction, and training and development as required.

The Board meets a minimum of four times a year. Board members appointed to either the Finance and General Purposes Sub-Committee or the Marketing and Development Sub-Committee will typically be required to commit to a further four days a year in addition to regular Board attendance. Board meetings are normally held in London.

Who we are looking for:
We are looking for up to 6 new Board members who can act as inspirational and influential advocates to lead us into the next stage of our development. We are particularly interested in hearing from prospective members who can bring new skills, knowledge and contacts to Without Walls and help shape the consortium over the next years.

Successful candidates should be able to demonstrate the following qualities:

• recognised leadership in their particular field, through senior leadership of an organisation, expertise in a relevant professional area, or artistic practice;

• a strong commitment to the mission of Without Walls and the promotion of arts activity in the UK and internationally;

• a strong commitment to promoting diversity in all its aspects;

• an understanding of governance and good practice in the non-profit sector and a willingness to support fundraising and relationship-building appropriately.

At this time we are particularly interested in applications from candidates with experience in areas such as marketing, fundraising, research and evaluation, education, legal and financial management. Recruitment of Board members who identify as Deaf & Disabled or BAME is particularly welcomed.

We welcome applications from potential board members from anywhere in the UK. The post is not a remunerated position, though Board members can claim expenses for travel and if necessary accommodation costs associated with attending meetings, and for any other costs incurred whilst undertaking planned activities on behalf of the organisation.

If invited to join the Board, new members will be asked to attend one board meeting as an observer. Following that they will be formally voted in at the next Board meeting.
