Gloves On

Ragroof Theatre

Theatre

Gloves On is a night-time, outdoor theatre show, set in and around a full size, a floodlit boxing ring.

Exploring boxing’s place in the British psyche, this intense and visceral performance conveys the emotional and physical challenges a boxer experiences and investigates the intricacies of courage, masculinity and honour, ritual and spectatorship.

In front of a fairground style façade, a barker whips up the crowd and introduces his fighters for the evening’s spectacle. The audience is invited to take the side of the champion or challenger before the battle commences and pounding breakbeats fill the space as the fighters enter the ring to the raucous delight of the crowd.

The imaginations of the Ragroof Theatre team, who make work in unusual spaces, are inspired by other people’s memories and knitted together using physical expression, text, soundscapes, poetry and visual language.
